Travel booking platform OYO has implemented a revised check-in policy, starting in Meerut, prohibiting unmarried couples from checking into its partner hotels. Effective immediately, the policy mandates couples to present valid proof of their relationship at the time of check-in, including for online bookings.

Under the new guidelines, partner hotels have been granted the discretion to decline couple bookings based on their judgment, aligning with local social norms, the company stated. The directive, which is currently limited to Meerut, may be extended to other cities based on feedback, sources familiar with the matter revealed.

This decision follows requests from civil society groups and residents, particularly in Meerut, who urged OYO to address concerns over unmarried couples staying in hotels.

Pawas Sharma, Region Head, OYO North India, explained, “While OYO respects personal freedoms, we are committed to working with law enforcement and civil society groups to uphold safe and responsible hospitality practices. This policy will be periodically reviewed for its impact.”

The initiative is part of OYO’s broader program to enhance its brand image as a safe and family-friendly accommodation provider. The company aims to encourage longer stays and build customer trust through measures like blacklisting hotels promoting unethical practices and conducting joint seminars with law enforcement on safe hospitality.
