'Used To Harass Her Over Petty Issues, Beat Her Up': Pune Software Engineer Dies By Suicide; Husband, Mother-In-Law Booked

Mumbai: A 27-year-old software engineer allegedly died by suicide on Thursday afternoon after jumping from the third floor of a residential building in the Manikbaug area of Pune.

According to a complaint filed by the deceased's brother, the woman took the extreme step after facing prolonged harassment from her husband and mother-in-law.

Following the complaint, the Sinhagad Road police registered a case under Section 108 (abetment to suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against the woman's husband, who is also a software engineer, her mother-in-law, and other relatives.

'Harass Her Over Petty Issues'

An officer from the Sinhagad Road police stated that the woman and her husband had met while working together at a software company and were married in November 2024. However, the marriage was soon marred by domestic conflict.

"According to the complainant, the victim's husband, mother-in-law and other relatives used to harass her over petty issues and beat her up at times," The Times of India quoted the officer as saying.

Frustrated by continuous harassment, the woman jumped to her death.

Woman Dies By Suicide In Less Than 2 Months Of Marriage

In a separate incident, a 26-year-old woman, Vishakha Tilkar, allegedly died by suicide at her home in Ambernath near Mumbai, less than two months after her marriage. Following the incident, Vishakha's family accused her doctor husband and in-laws of subjecting her to physical and mental harassment.

The couple married on April 30. According to the victim's family, everything appeared fine before the wedding, but the situation changed soon after. The family alleged that her in-laws were upset over the amount of gifts and the level of 'respect' they received during the marriage ceremony.

"She was constantly pressured to bring jewellery and money from her parents' home," a family member told NDTV.
