Jagran Correspondent, Jalandhar/Hoshiarpur: After the name of Hoshiarpur Tanda police station SHO Gurinderjit Singh Nagra surfaced in an extortion case under the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) Operation Hardball in the United States, the Punjab Police has swung into action. The police have transferred Nagra to Hoshiarpur Police Lines with immediate effect.
An official statement issued by the Punjab Police stated that the veracity of these allegations has not yet been confirmed. As a precautionary measure, Inspector Gurinderjit Singh Nagra has been transferred from the Tanda police station to the Hoshiarpur police lines pending the investigation.
To ensure a fair investigation of the case, the DIG, Jalandhar Range, has ordered a fact-finding inquiry. The investigation has been assigned to the Superintendent of Police (Investigation), Jalandhar Rural, an IPS officer.
The investigating officer has been instructed to thoroughly probe all allegations, available facts, and relevant documents and submit a detailed report as soon as possible.
Next step after report
The Punjab Police has clarified that this is only a preliminary investigation and it would be premature to draw any conclusions.
Upon receiving the investigation report, if any truth is found in the allegations, strict action will be taken in accordance with the law, the officials added. However, if the allegations are found to be baseless, action will be taken accordingly.

What's the case?
The case involves the murder of Balwinder Singh in Miyani village, Tanda area of Hoshiarpur. The victim's family alleged that former in-laws of Balwinder Singh's daughter were behind the murder. Balwinder Singh's daughter was married in the United States but later divorced.
It is alleged that SHO Nagra conducted the investigation. He had contacted the accused living in the US multiple times by phone. The accused family alleged that Nagra demanded approximately Rs 3.82 crore and threatened to implicate them in the murder case if they did not pay.
The family filed a complaint with US investigative agencies. Later, US officials claimed that during the investigation, they discovered numerous recorded conversations between the officer in question and the family living in the US. They also alleged that the officer had connections with some alleged gangsters.
The federal indictments unsealed in Los Angeles also allege that Nagra allegedly worked with members of the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria transnational crime syndicate in the US.
He aided in extorting victims in India through threats of false criminal complaints. The indictment added that the case of a US family was one of the extortion cases.
Why US want Gurinderjit Singh's extradition?
The prosecutor in the US has claimed that the Bhagwanpuria syndicate collaborated with corrupt police officers in Punjab to carry out extortion schemes.
In April 2026, Gurlal Singh, an Indian national unlawfully present in the US, threatened a man in the US. He then shared his information with a corrupt Punjab police officer.
The information, according to the prosecutor, was used to allegedly file a false murder complaint against the said man.
While the indictment initially referred only to a 'corrupt law enforcement officer', US authorities later identified him as Gurinderjit Singh Nagra.
