Punjab Floods: In the middle of devastating floods in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district, a story of bravery and compassion stood out, a story where one woman’s courage made sure love wasn’t washed away by rising waters.
On what was supposed to be the happiest day of her life, a young bride named Karmi found herself trapped in her flooded village. Her wedding was just hours away, but the water had risen so high around Saleh Chak near Kalanaur that there seemed to be no way out. The groom and his family had already left from Batala, the venue was ready, and the bride was dressed, yet she and her loved ones could only watch helplessly as the flood blocked every path.
That’s when help came in the most unexpected yet heroic way.
SDM of Kalanaur, Jyotsna Singh, didn’t wait for orders or hesitate in the face of danger. As soon as she heard about the situation that the bride was all ready, the rituals were done, and her special day was slipping away, she acted immediately. She climbed into a rescue boat with an NDRF team and set off straight into the flood-hit village.
According to Jagran.com, the bride’s father, Bua Masih, had contacted the village sarpanch, who then called SDM Singh for help. Understanding the urgency, she took it upon herself to ensure the bride wouldn’t miss the most important day of her life.
Once she reached the village, Singh didn’t just oversee the operation, she personally greeted Karmi, congratulated her, and made sure the entire family was safely helped into the boat. They were ferried through the floodwaters to Kalanaur, where the wedding finally took place joyfully, and against all odds.
It was a moment no one there would forget. A family that had been on the verge of heartbreak was able to celebrate instead, thanks to the compassion and boldness of one official who refused to let the flood win.
The bride’s family later shared their deep gratitude with the district administration, especially SDM Jyotsna Singh, whose timely intervention turned a disaster into a story of hope and humanity.
