The Indian Railways is mulling a hike in the ticket prices of all AC and non-AC express, mail and second-class trains. The revised fares will likely come into effect from July 1 after approval by the ministry.

Under the new fare policy, ticket prices may increase by 1 paisa per kilometre in non-AC coaches and 2 paisa per kilometre in AC coaches. However, this policy will only be implemented for distances beyond 500 km. Fares for people travelling a distance less than 500 km will remain unchanged.

People travelling in second class will have to pay half a paisa per kilometre for a distance of more than 500 km. Passengers travelling in non-AC coaches of mail and express trains will have to pay 1 paisa more per kilometre. At the same time, passengers travelling in AC coaches will have to pay 2 paisa more per kilometre.

Besides, these changes will be implemented only in AC and non-AC coaches of express and mail trains.

The proposal to increase the fare has been prepared by the Railway Board. It has been sent to the Railway Ministry for approval.

Earlier this month, Indian Railways announced a major policy update, making Aadhaar authentication mandatory for booking of Tatkal train tickets from July 1. Additionally, from July 15, passengers will be required to complete Aadhaar-based OTP verification as an extra step during the Tatkal ticket booking process.
