Dera Sacha Sauda Chief, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, who was lodged in jail for raping two women disciples has been granted a 50-day parole. This is the seventh time the rape convict has been given temporary release from jail in the past 24 months and is the ninth parole in the last four years.

Rahim (56), has a prominent following in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. The accused was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment in 2017 for raping two disciples and later received life imprisonment in two murder cases, including the murder of journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati and Dera Manager Ranjit Singh in 2002.

Rahim alias MSG was convicted of planning the murder of Ranjit Singh, a Dera manager in 2021. He along with three of his accomplices were convicted in 2019 for the murder of a journalist more than 16 years ago.

Alleging the Haryana Government's support in the release of Rahim, Ex-DCW Chief, Swati Maliwal shared a post on Instagram with a caption that read, 'Extremely Shameful'. "Will the government push the daughters of the nation in well just for the sake of a few votes?" she asked in her post.

According to the Haryana Good Conduct Prisoners (Temporary Release) Act, 2022, convicted prisoners can be granted regular parole. However, prisoners convicted of multiple murders or under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act are ineligible  for parole.
