- Four-storey PG building collapsed in Satya Niketan.
- Several feared trapped; NDRF, police conducting rescue.
- Second collapse in Satya Niketan in four years.
Swadesh Kumar, New Delhi: A building collapsed in South Delhi's Satya Niketan on Sunday, leaving several people feared trapped under the debris. The structure, built on an approximately 80-yard plot, had 25 rooms across its floors and was being used as a Paying Guest (PG) accommodation. Following the incident, teams from the police, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and Civil Defence volunteers rushed to the spot and began rescue operations.
Second Building Collapse In Satya Niketan
This is the second building collapse in Satya Niketan in four years. On April 25, 2022, two workers died when an old three-storey building collapsed during illegal renovation work. Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) officials had issued a notice to stop the renovation at the time, but the work continued. An inquiry was ordered after the 2022 incident, but no action was taken against those responsible.
Recurring Building Collapses In Delhi Raise Concerns
The incident in Satya Niketan comes just three months after a similar incident occurred in South Delhi's Saidulajab area near Saket in May, where a five-storey building collapsed, killing six people.
Experts say recurring building collapses across the national capital stem from unchecked illegal construction, violations of basic safety norms, and lax enforcement. While structural audits and safety surveys are promised after every incident, they mostly remain confined to paper while unauthorised modifications and unsafe basement excavations continue without check.
