Tourists and commuters on Himachal Pradesh's Shimla-Kalka toy train will have to board and disembark at Tara Devi station, some 7 kilometres from the state capital, because the route has been stopped for 14 days to rehabilitate Bridge Number 800, authorities said on Friday.
The UNESCO World Heritage Shimla-Kalka railway line was damaged in Shimla's Summer Hill in August 2023 when a major landslide swept away a 50-metre bridge on the Summerhill-Jutogh segment, leaving a piece of the track hanging.
The bridge was temporarily rebuilt, but it will now be permanently replaced.
From May 30 to June 12, all trains will start and terminate in Tara Devi, which is around 7 kilometres from Shimla, according to a press statement from Yashanjit Singh, Senior Divisional Manager (Commerce), Ambala Division.
To help commuters, the Railways have partnered with the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC). According to Singh, there will be two buses outside Tara Devi station that cost Rs 22 one way.
During the bridge replacement project, Tara Devi station will be the base for four train services, two in each direction.
