Sushil Modi Death: Senior BJP leader and former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi has passed away, current Bihar Deputy CM Vijay Kumar Sinha informed on Monday. Sushil Modi was aged 72 at the time of his death. The veteran BJP leader had served multiple terms as the Finance Minister of Bihar -- once from 2005 to 2013 and later from 2017 to 2020. Sushil Modi was a lifelong member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

He had also served as members of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. He started his political career as a student leader at Patna University and his contribution to the movement against the 21-month Emergency imposed between 1975 and 1977 remains notable. He spent 19 months in jail in the Emergency period. Sushil Modi was appointed the State Secretary of the RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad after Emergency was lifted. 

Sushil Modi Death: Last Breath At AIIMS Delhi

Sushil Modi was diagnosed with cancer towards the end of 2023, as per an update he himself provided last month. The senior BJP leader breathed his last breath at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi, Jagran.com reported. Announcing the diagnosis of his cancer, Sushil Modi on April 3 this year said that he would not be participating in the BJP's campaign activities for the ongoing Lok Sabha election. "I have conveyed everything to the [Prime Minister]," Sushil Modi had said in an X (formerly Twitter) post.

Informing about Sushil Kumar Modi's demise, Vijay Kumar Sinha wrote on X: "This is an irreparable loss for the entire BJP organization family as well as countless workers like me. He will always be remembered for his organization skills, administrative understanding and his deep knowledge on social political issues. May God grant eternal peace to the departed soul and give strength to the family in this hour of grief."

Sushil Modi Death: PM Modi's Condolence

Expressing grief over Sushil Modi's death, Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on X: "I am deeply saddened by the untimely demise of Sushil Modi ji, my valuable colleague in the party and my friend for decades. He has played an invaluable role in the rise and success of BJP in Bihar. Strongly opposing the Emergency, he made a name for himself in student politics. He was known as a very hardworking and sociable MLA. He had a deep understanding of the issues related to politics. He also did a lot of commendable work as an administrator. His active role in the passage of GST will always be remembered. My condolences are with his family and supporters in this hour of grief. Om Shanti!"

Sushil Modi Death: Ravi Shankar Prasad's Reaction

Condoling Sushil Modi's demise, BJP leader and former union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said, "The demise of Bihar and BJP's stalwart leader, former Deputy Chief Minister and my affectionate elder brother Sushil Modi ji is very sad. He played a very important role in fighting against corruption and expanding the BJP. I am deeply saddened by his untimely demise. This was not the time for him to go. My very humble tribute!"
