The accident took place near Idaikal in Tenkasi district when a private bus travelling from Tenkasi to Rajapalayam collided directly with another bus heading from Sankarankovil toward Tenkasi.
The collision was so severe that it left both private buses mangled, prompting a massive rescue operation by the local authorities and firefighters. All 28 passengers who were injured in the bus collision were rushed to nearby hospitals and are currently receiving treatment.
Speaking to NDTV, a senior police official said that the initial investigation reveals reckless driving by the driver of the Keysar bus, the one travelling from Madurai to Senkottai, as the cause of the fatal collision.“Investigators believe speeding and negligent driving by the Keysar bus driver caused the crash,” the official said.
Health officials at the accident site have stated that the condition of some injured passengers is still serious, and due to the severity of the injuries, the death toll is likely to increase, the report added.
