A 27-year-old woman died by suicide in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruppur district after allegedly facing severe dowry harassment and physical and mental abuse from her husband and in-laws. The newlywed, daughter of garment businessman and former political candidate Annadurai, had married 28-year-old Kavin Kumar on April 11, 2025, in a lavish ceremony. 

According to the News18 report, her family had given 300 sovereigns of gold, a Rs 70 lakh Volvo car, and spent Rs 2.5 crore on the wedding, with an additional 200 sovereigns promised as dowry.

Despite the extravagant dowry, the harassment began just ten days after the wedding. Rithanya faced continuous abuse from her husband Kavin Kumar, father-in-law Easwaramoorthy, and mother-in-law Chithradevi, who pressured her for the remaining 200 sovereigns of gold. The cruelty escalated, she was humiliated over minor issues and made to stand for hours as punishment. 

On Saturday afternoon, after visiting the Thalakkarai Lakshmi Narasimha Perumal Temple, she bought pesticide from Seyur and consumed it inside her car while heading to the Mondipalayam Perumal Temple. Locals found her unconscious and informed the police, who took her to Avinashi Government Hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival.

Before ending her life, Rithanya recorded a heartbreaking WhatsApp voice message to her father, directly blaming her husband and in-laws for her suffering. In the message, she detailed the unbearable abuse she endured and revealed that Kavin Kumar had threatened to take his own life if she exposed his actions. Her death triggered widespread outrage, prompting her family to protest at the hospital and stage a road blockade, demanding swift justice.

During an investigation by the Tiruppur RDO, police registered a case of abetment to suicide and arrested Kavin Kumar, Easwaramoorthy, and Chithradevi. All three have been remanded to judicial custody. The incident has sent shockwaves through the region, with Rithanya’s viral audio message further fuelling public anger and demands for accounta.
