Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Thursday, launched a scathing attack on the Centre and Madhya Pradesh government over the death of two newborns at Indore’s Maharaja Yeshwantrao (MY) Hospital, who allegedly died due to rat bites. Calling the incident “horrific”, “inhuman” and “insensitive”, Gandhi described the incident as an “outright murder” and not a mere accident.

“In Indore, two newborn babies died due to rat bites in Madhya Pradesh's largest government hospital - this is no accident, this is outright murder. This incident is so horrific, inhuman, and insensitive that even hearing about it sends shivers down the spine,” Gandhi wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Rahul Gandhi's remarks came in response to the deaths of two newborns undergoing treatment at Indore’s Maharaja Yeshwantrao (MY) Hospital, who, according to hospital authorities quoted by news agency ANI, allegedly died after being bitten by rats on Sunday and Monday.

One newborn died on Tuesday morning, while the other, a baby girl just 3 to 4 days old, succumbed to her injuries on Wednesday afternoon.

Following the incident, the Leader of the Opposition slammed the BJP-led government and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, saying, “A child has been snatched from a mother's lap, simply because the government failed to fulfil its most basic responsibility… PM Modi and the Chief Minister of MP should hang their heads in shame.”

Madhya Pradesh Government Orders Strict Action

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has vowed strict action and ordered an inquiry into the accident. Additionally, the Deputy Chief Minister and Health Minister have said that a high-level committee has been formed to probe the incident.

“Our government will not tolerate any negligence. I have issued instructions to the Collector and have also told the PS of the Health Department. I have also asked the Health Minister to take action on this,” CM Yadav said.
