Udhampur Encounter: An encounter broke out between terrorists and security forces in the Udhampur district of Jammu & Kashmir on Tuesday, officials said. According to the police, the gunfight erupted within the jurisdiction of the Basantgarh area of Udhampur, which falls under the Jammu division.

"After specfic input was gleaned regarding movement in the area, a SADO was launched in the wee hours today by our parties; contact has been established with a group of terrorists in Khaned area of PS Basantgarh. Ops underway," DIG, Udhampur-Reasi, Rayees Mohammad Bhat, said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Udhampur is one of the mountainous districts of the Jammu division where foreign terrorists have been reported to be hiding in the dense forests. In order to eradicate terrorism from the hilly districts of the Jammu division including Poonch, Rajouri, Doda, Kathua, Reasi and Udhampur districts, the army has deployed over 4,000 soldiers, including elite Para commandos and those trained in mountain warfare.

The Doda, Poonch, Rajouri, Reasi, Kathua, Ramban and Udhampur districts in the relatively peaceful Jammu division of J&K have witnessed around a dozen terror-related incidents in recent months.

Terrorists hiding in several of the dense forests across Jammu have carried out hit-and-run attacks against civilians and members of the security forces. Last month, an encounter claimed the lives of four Indian Army personnel in Doda.
