Uttarkashi CDO Gaurav Kumar on Tuesday said all the workers trapped inside the under-construction tunnel were safe and communication was established with them today. “I went inside the tunnel and we are talking with the workers trapped inside. Communication was established with them at 10 am. They are safe and sound. Edible items and drinking water are being arranged for them and the CMO has also arranged some medicines,” he said while talking to the media.

About the rescue operation, CDO Kumar said the process of pushing the pipe inside was about to start. “Pipe pushing is about to start. The platform for that is ready and we are proceeding as per schedule,” he added.

CDO also said an access control was established by police and ITBP at the site. He asked people visiting the area to follow the access control. “I would like to appeal and tell people that access control was done by police and ITBP. It is required for people and machines to work. I would ask everyone to follow the access control,” he said.

A section of the under-construction tunnel on the Brahmakhal-Yamunotri national highway in Uttarkashi collapsed on Sunday morning, trapping over 36 workers inside. A massive rescue operation was launched by the National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, fire brigade, and personnel from the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) after the mishap.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday dialled Uttarakhand CM Dhami to take stock of the rescue operation.

Dhami visited the incident site and directed the officials involved in the rescue operation to expedite the process. A wide pipe is being pushed inside the tunnel to evacuate the trapped workers through it.
