Actor-turned-politician, Vijay, also known as 'Thalapathy' took oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on May 10 at Chennai's Nehru Stadium. Vijay assumed charge of the top post after Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) created history by upsetting giants - Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) in the Tamil Nadu Assembly election 2026. TVK emerged as the single largest party bagging 108 seats in the 234-seat assembly.

Vijay Movie Career

Vijay has been one of the biggest stars in the South film industry. When he debuted as a child artist in Vetri, no one could have predicted he would one day dominate the industry with such undeniable charm and talent. 

It was in 2004 when Vijay truly ruled hearts with the release of his massive blockbuster, Ghilli. It was the first Tamil film to gross over Rs 500 million at the domestic box office. After Ghilli, Vijay delivered several blockbusters like Thuppakki, Mersal, Master, Leo, among others. Over a three-decade career starting in the early 1990s, he built massive fan support in Tamil cinema, later achieving pan-India appeal.

Vijay Trades Silver Stage For Political Stage

The speculation surrounding Vijay's possible political entry started in 2013 when Thalaiva hit the theatres. If Pritham K Chakravarthy is to be believed, then the "seed was planted" by his father, who was keen on joining politics.

After delivering back to back blockbusters, Vijay stepped into politics in 2024. The actor announced retirement from movies before launching his own political party TVK. As quoted by Indian Express, Vijay had said, "At the absolute height of my career, I am throwing it away, throwing away the salary I was drawing, and I am coming to you as your Vijay. I am placing all my trust in you."

The 'Vijay Effect'

Vijay being an outsider to Dravidian politics, TVK’s success can be linked to his massive fan network, especially among young voters and an efficient use of social media that eventually converted popularity into votes.

The "Vijay effect" coupled with anti-incumbency ousted DMK from Tamil Nadu. Despite MK Stalin’s effort to retain voter confidence, Vijay’s fresh face along with dissatisfaction towards existing leadership gave room for change in Tamil Nadu.

Vijay’s rise to power mirrors journeys of MGR and Jayalalithaa. Adapting to the current scene, the TVK chief also used social media mobilisation and youth-focussed messaging to his benefit. His success makes it clear that even though Tamil Nadu’s star culture continues, it still demands more than just screen presence.
