Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tamil Nadu chief minister Vijay on Sunday inaugurated the Poonamallee-Vadapalani stretch of Phase II of the Chennai Metro Rail project. The metro stretch has been built at a cost of around Rs4,900 crore. After inaugurating the services, the two leaders shared a ride on the metro train.

11 New Stations On New Stretch
The stations covered under the yellow line included:
1. Poonamallee Bypass
2. Poonamallee Bus Stand
3. Poonamallee Government Hospital
4. Karayanchavadi
5. Kumananchavadi
6. Kattupakkam
7. Iyappanthangal
8. Thelliyaragaram
9. Porur Bypass
10. Porur Junction
11. Vadapalani
The services are reportedly expected to begin from October 12 from 7 am to 9 pm in both directions. The last train service shall depart at 9 pm from both terminals (Poonamallee Bypass Metro and Corridor 4 Vadapalani Metro).
Check the ticket fares
The ticket fares covering the yellow line, roughly starts from Rs Rs 10 and can go upto Rs 40 depending upon the distance travelled. Minimum fare, covering short distances like Poonamallee Bypass to Poonamallee Bus Stand.
Mid-range fare for intermediate journeys connecting residential blocks like Kumananchavadi, Kattupakkam, and Iyyappanthangal to Porur.Maximum fare for a full one-way ride between the Poonamallee Bypass and Vadapalani terminals. If you switch lines between the new Phase II stretch and the pre-existing Phase I network to travel longer distances across the city, the maximum fare is capped at Rs 50.
Line to serve as a great alternative
The new line will provide an alternative for commuters from Poonamallee, Kumananchavadi, Kattupakkam, Iyyappanthangal, and Porur, who currently depend heavily on road transport.
At Vadapalani, commuters will be able to connect with the existing Phase I Metro network, providing access to other parts of the city. The opening of the stretch is also expected to improve connectivity between the western suburbs and central Chennai.
Advanced Signalling Systems, Driverless Operations
The metro rail corridor features a unique 3.7-km double-decker structure. It also features advanced signalling systems designed to support driverless operations.
The stretch will significantly reduce daily travel time for commuters and improve connectivity between Chennai's western suburbs and the city centre.
