A video is going viral on social media showing a family stealing bedsheets and towels from the first AC coach of the Purushottam Express, a train running between Puri and Delhi. In the video, a woman and two men can be seen reluctantly returning the items after being confronted on the platform by Travelling Ticket Examiners (TTEs)

"Sir, see here, bedsheets and blankets are coming out of all the bags. Towels, bedsheets altogether, four sets. Either return them or pay Rs 780," the railway attendant said in the video in Odia.

The incident took place when Travelling Ticket Examiners (TTEs) and railway staff confronted a family for allegedly stealing bedsheets and towels meant for passenger use. One of the passengers claimed it was an honest mistake, suggesting that his mother may have accidentally packed the items. However, railway staff remained unconvinced. A train attendant questioned the family’s actions, highlighting the irony that they were travelling in First AC and reportedly on a pilgrimage. The TTE stepped in and cautioned them that the situation could lead to legal consequences under the Railways Act.

"Travelling in the 1st AC of the Purushottam Express is a matter of pride itself. But still, people are there who don't hesitate to steal and take home those bedsheets supplied for additional comfort during travel," the tweet was captioned.

Netizens Reaction

“Why can't@RailMinIndia and@AshwiniVaishnaw implement a Rail Hostess-type system? It will also create employment and charge passengers who want facilities, rather than providing everything for free, which would lead to people looting national resources,” a user said.

“hehe koi vote chori kar raha hai koi chadar, sab chadarmod hai,” another user said.

“These people do the same when they go to the US and tarnish the image of India. We are a dirty lot!” a third user added.

Railway Reaction

In the comments section, Railway Seva, the official account, confirmed: "The matter has been escalated to the concerned official for necessary action."
