After NDA announced CP Radhakrishnan as their Vice Presidential candidate, the opposition INDIA bloc is very likely to pit DMK Rajya Sabha MP Tiruchi Siva against Krishnan.
According to the report, the decision is likely to be taken in light of the regional politics as Radhakrishnan comes from Tamil Nadu and the BJP has time and again preferred southern states for key picks, including in the Cabinet. Moreover, assembly elections in tamil Nadu are slated for the next year.
The discussion on the candidate will be taken in the opposition meeting to be held today at the Rajya Sabha office of the Upper House LoP Mallikarjun Kharge. On Sunday evening, BJP parlimentary panel meeting was held. It was attended by PM Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP president JP Nadda and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, among others.
During the meeting Radhakrishnan, who is Maharashtra Governor at present, was named as the NDA candidate. Radhakrishnan is one of the BJP's most prominent leaders in Tamil Nadu.
The move was welcomed by not only the NDa allies but from few opposition parties too. DMK MP TKS Elangovan, while talking to NDTV, welcomes the decision of fielding a candidate from Tamil Nadu.
Similarly, Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee media chairman Satish Paul Munjini has also welcomed the decision as Radhakrishan had served as the state Governor in the past. The election for the VP's office is to be held on September 9 and the last day of nomination filing is August 21.
The Vice Presidential election have been necessitated after former VP Jagdeep Dhankhar's sudden resignation. Dhankhar resigned on July 7, citing health reasons, although sources later pointed to differences with the BJP which forced him to resign early.
