Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday evening dialed Congress president and Rajya Sabha LoP Mallikarjun Kharge to seek support for NDA's Vice Presidential candidate CP Radhakrishnan.

News agency PTI reported, based on sources, that on behalf of the BJP-led ruling NDA, Rajnath Singh will supervise the VP elections. Meanwhile, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has been made the election agent.

DMK, Jharkhand Congress welcome NDA's decision

CP Radhakrishnan's candidature is likely to make the contest interesting as DMK MP TKS Elangivan has welcomed the decision. While talking to NDTV, he said, "It is a welcome move. He (Mr Radhakrishnan) is a Tamilian and after a long time a Tamilian may become the vice president of India. INDIA bloc also has its own choice, and DMK will go by the decision of the alliance".

Moreover, Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee media chairman Satish Paul Munjini has also welcomed the decision. He said, NDA has announced CP Radhakrishnan as its Vice Presidential candidate, and I welcome this decision. Having served as the Governor of Jharkhand, we hope he will uphold the Constitution and work in the nation's interest, rather than acting as the government's mouthpiece or weakening democratic institutions."

Earlier, while making the announcement of Radhakrishnan's name BJP chief JP Nadda also stated that the government was in touch with the opposition and would talk to them to ensure the election of VP to be unanimous.

INDIA bloc to discuss VP election today 

Nevertheless, Kharge had called an INDIA bloc leaders' meet today in which the discussion on the VP elections is likely to be made. The election for the VP's office is to be held on September 9 and the last day of nomination filing is August 21.
