Weather Update: A biting cold wave continues to sweep across North India, with nighttime temperatures dipping close to freezing in several regions. Prompting this, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for multiple states, forecasting severe cold wave conditions and dense to very dense fog during the early morning hours. These harsh weather conditions are significantly disrupting daily life, causing widespread delays in road, rail, and air transportation.
While North India reels under these intense winter conditions, parts of southern India, including Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, are preparing for heavy spells of rain.
Punjab And Haryana Weather
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for cold day conditions in Punjab and Haryana as temperatures plummeted to near-freezing levels, with Bathinda and Gurugram recording a minimum temperature of 0.6 degrees Celsius, while temperatures in cities like Amritsar and Faridkot hovered around 2 degrees Celsius.
While the IMD is expected to downgrade the orange alert to a yellow alert starting January 14, biting cold and dense fog is likely to persist throughout the week.
Dense Fog And Cold Wave Alert For THESE States
- The weather department has forecast dense to very dense fog over Punjab, Haryana, and northern Rajasthan, with patchy fog expected in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Bihar.
- Foggy conditions are expected to affect visibility during the early morning and night hours, causing significant disruptions to road, rail, and air travel.
- Adding to the chill, the Meteorological Department has forecast severe "cold day" conditions in parts of Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh on January 13 and 14. A similar cold wave is expected to grip Delhi, Rajasthan, and the Himalayan states over the coming days, with eastern states such as Odisha and Jharkhand also seeing a sharp dip in temperatures later this week.
Tamil Nadu Weather Update
- While North India continues to reel under harsh winter conditions, southern states, including Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and the Karaikal region, received heavy rainfall under the influence of the northwest monsoon.
- According to the IMD bulletin, light to moderate rain and thunderstorms are expected to continue over the next week, with the possibility of heavy showers in isolated districts today.
