West Bengal: Days after the Durgapur gangrape horror, three people were arrested in West Bengal’s Ulluberia for allegedly assaulting a woman doctor at a government hospital and threatening her with rape.
This incident comes a year after the brutal rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The incident has once again sparked a political blame game, with the Trinamool Congress and opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) trading accusations over law and order and women’s safety.
Woman Doctor Assaulted At Ulluberia Hospital
The shocking incident took place on Monday at Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay Government Medical College and Hospital in Uluberia, Howrah district. The three accused, who are believed to be the relatives of a patient admitted to the hospital, reportedly had an altercation with the female doctor that escalated into an assault.
Following the incident, the doctor filed a complaint with the police, resulting in the arrests. Among those arrested is a man serving as a Home Guard, who also works as a traffic cop. The three accused have been identified as Sheikh Samrat, Sheikh Babulal, the Home Guard and Sheikh Hasibul, NDTV reported.
The Joint Forums of Doctors, which represents doctors across Bengal, visited the Ulluberia Hospital and voiced concerns about the safety of doctors while on duty.
BJP Slams TMC Over Ulluberia Doctor Assault Incident
Following the incident, the BJP has targeted the ruling Trinamool Congress. State BJP president and Rajya Sabha MP Samik Bhattacharya condemned the ruling party, saying that the Mamata Banerjee government failed to learn from the RG Kar Medical College case.
“Trinamool has created a troubled society where perverted Home Guards and civic volunteers are part of the party. They believe it is their government. They do not care about police or administration. There is no CCTV surveillance. It is an unfortunate incident,” he said.
Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar launched a scathing attack on the Mamata Banerjee government, saying it is “terrifying” how unsafe women have become in West Bengal under her rule.
In a post on X, he wrote, “After the bone-chilling R.G. Kar Medical College rape and murder incident, the Chief Minister's loud claims stand completely exposed. The latest proof - the shocking incident at Uluberia Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay Government Medical College in Howrah. A woman doctor was harassed and threatened with rape inside the hospital by a Home Guard! The doctor also alleged that there were no security personnel present at the time. The victim is now traumatised and living in fear.”
“No matter how much the failed Chief Minister @MamataOfficial tries to shirk responsibility, she and her incompetent, exposed police administration are squarely to blame. Under Mamata Banerjee's rule, women in Bengal are terrifyingly unsafe and each such incident shows the Trinamool government's sins have overflown their limits,” he added.

TMC Condemns Incident, Hits Back At BJP
Trinamool Congress spokesperson Arun Chakraborty called the incident “condemnable and unfortunate,” emphasising that all the accused have been arrested.
Responding to the BJP’s criticism, he said, “Why was Suvendu Adhikari silent when one of his party workers was arrested in a rape case in Nandigram?”
