Jharkhand has taken a major step to boost litchi production, with 336 panchayats selected for the planting of litchi saplings. Preparations for plantation in these areas have been completed, and Birsa Agricultural University (BAU) is providing technical consultation for the initiative.

Following BAU’s guidance, a similar consultation had earlier helped the state achieve self-sufficiency in mango production. This success has prompted authorities to replicate the model for litchi cultivation.

The litchi saplings will be purchased from the Horticulture Mission to ensure quality and avail discounts. The entire plantation cost, including sapling procurement and labour charges, will be funded under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA).

The scheme also covers maintenance of the saplings for five years, a first for any state in India, ensuring long-term growth and sustainability.
