Chia Seeds Risks: Chia seeds are considered to be one of the most popular superfoods that are healthy owing to their high fibre content, omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants. Their versatility makes them one of the favourite additions to smoothies, yoghurts, and baked goods for multiple health benefits, which include digestion, heart health and sustained energy levels. Although they offer numerous benefits, chai seeds are not for everyone. It is generally safe to consume, but some groups of people should limit their consumption or completely avoid chia seeds, as they might cause adverse health issues.

Reportedly, chia seeds are virtually tasteless, easy-to-digest (when prepared properly), super nutrient-dense and full of energy-boosting power. However, people with certain medical conditions or sensitivities may experience chia seeds causing discomfort or exacerbation of symptoms. Dr Jushya Bhatia Sarin shared on her Instagram post about the five groups of people who should not eat chia seeds. Knowing these limitations contributes to safe and responsible consumption, whereby individuals can enjoy the benefits of chia seeds without compromising their health.

People Who Should Not Eat Chia Seeds

Digestive And Gut Issues

Poeple who are suffering from digestive and gut issues like bloating, IBS, or chronic constipation should avoid chia seeds as they may worsen the discomfort. Chia seeds swell up in the stomach, which can lead to cramps and gassy feelings.

Blood Thinners

Individuals taking blood-thinning medications should stay away from chia seeds due to their high omega-3 content, which may increase bleeding risk.

Lower Blood Pressure

Those who have naturally low blood pressure should avoid chia seeds, which are rich in Alpha-linolenic acid and potassium, causing their BP levels to drop even further. People might feel dizzy or weak in such cases.

Kidney Patients

Anyone who is suffering from kidney diseases or reduced kidney function should avoid chia seeds that are rich in potassium or phosphorus so as to prevent additional health complications.

Allergic To Mustard Seeds, Sesame Seeds Or Flaxseeds

People who are allergic to sesame seeds, mustard seeds or flaxseeds should avoid chia seeds as there can be a slight chance of cross-reaction with the latter. People may experience signs like redness, itching or breathing issues.

Thus, chia seeds indeed provide many health benefits, but they are not for everyone. It is important to be aware of the people who are experiencing the above health issues that consumption of chia seeds might worsen their condition.
