Bloating is a pervasive issue that affects individuals across various seasons with summer being a particularly challenging time. The warmer weather often leads to increased consumption of cold beverages, icy treats and raw or high-fibre foods which can be difficult for the digestive system to process. As a result, the body retains more water and gas, causing discomfort, swelling and bloating. This digestive distress can be further exacerbated by factors such as dehydration and poor gut health. When left unaddressed, bloating can significantly impact daily life, causing embarrassment, anxiety and decreased productivity. Moreover, chronic bloating can also disturb digestive health, leading to conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), acid reflux and other gastrointestinal issues.

While overeating and gas-forming foods are common culprits of bloating, there are several lesser-known causes of bloating that are often overlooked. In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Shubham Vatsya, Senior Consultant Gastroenterology, Fortis Hospital Vasant Kunj listed several unknown causes of bloating and shared tips to maintain good gut health.

Lesser-Known Causes Of Bloating

Swallowing Air (Aerophagia)- Rapid eating, chewing gum or drinking carbonated beverages can lead to excess air in the digestive tract, causing bloating and discomfort.

Low Stomach Acid (Hypochlorhydria)- Insufficient stomach acid can impair digestion, leading to undigested food fermenting in the gut, producing gas and bloating.

Food Intolerances- Even minor intolerances (e.g., to eggs, soy or fructose) can trigger bloating. These are often missed unless a detailed dietary evaluation or elimination diet is performed.

Imbalance In Gut Microbiota (Dysbiosis)- An unhealthy gut microbiome can lead to excessive fermentation of food in the colon, causing gas and bloating.

Hormonal Fluctuations- Especially in women, hormonal shifts during menstruation or perimenopause can slow digestion and contribute to bloating.

Tips For Maintaining Gut Health And Reducing Bloating

1. Eat slowly and chew thoroughly to reduce swallowed air.

2. Limit artificial sweeteners and processed foods that can irritate the gut lining.

3. Stay hydrated as water aids digestion and prevents constipation-related bloating.

4. Incorporate probiotics and prebiotic-rich foods like yogurt, kefir, bananas and oats to support a balanced gut microbiome.

5. Track your meals and symptoms to identify any intolerances or patterns.

If bloating persists or worsens, consult a gastroenterologist to rule out underlying conditions like IBS or SIBO.
