Most people assume 'heartburn' and 'acid reflux' are one and the same but although they're connected, they're not the same. Knowing their differences will enable you to treat symptoms better and avoid long-term implications. Recognising the signs and symptoms of heartburn and acid reflux is essential to seeking proper treatment and alleviating suffering.

In a conversation with The Daily Jagran, Dr Anukalp Prakash, Director of Gastroenterology at CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram explained how to know the difference between heartburn and acid reflux.

What Is Acid Reflux?

Acid Reflux is when stomach acid moves backward into the esophagus due to a relaxed or weakened lower esophageal sphincter (LES), a muscle-like valve.

What Is Heartburn?

Heartburn is an acid reflux symptom. It's the burning sensation in your chest or throat due to that acid irritation.

Where It Hurts?

Acid Reflux: May cause chest, upper abdominal or throat pain or discomfort. It can also create symptoms such as coughing, hoarseness, or a lump-like sensation in the throat.

Heartburn: Typically feels like burning behind the breastbone, occasionally spreading up toward the neck or jaw.

Timing Of Symptoms

Acid Reflux: May occur at anytime, but is more likely after big, fatty, or spicy meals and when bending or lying down.

Heartburn: Usually occurs after a meal and is worse if you lie down soon after eating.

Associated Symptoms

Acid Reflux: Usually accompanied by regurgitation (sour liquid in the mouth), bloating, bad breath, or sore throat.

Heartburn: Primarily the burning, but possibly with a bitter or sour taste.

Frequency And Severity

Acid Reflux: Occasional reflux is normal; however, if it occurs more than two times a week, it could be GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) which can harm the esophagus.

Heartburn: Occasional occurrence is typical but frequent or severe heartburn tends to indicate continuous acid reflux.

When To See A Doctor

Consult a doctor if you have recurring symptoms, difficulty swallowing, unwarranted weight loss or chest pain that masquerades as heart issues.

Heartburn is only one symptom of acid reflux, but reflux can create a plethora of symptoms other than burning. Understanding the difference allows you to take the appropriate action be it through dietary adjustment, improved eating habits or medical intervention to maintain your digestive system in good health.
