Met Gala 2026 Theme: Although the annual Met Gala 2026 is pretty far away, the Metropolitan Museum of Art on November 17, 2025 has already revealed the theme of their spring 2026 exhibition and it is ‘Costume Art.’ For all the fashion enthusiasts across the world who look forward to the fashion’s biggest exhibition, the Met Gala’s 2026 theme pushes the belief that fashion isn’t just clothing, it’s a legitimate art form, a little too much. The spring 2026 exhibition at the Costume Institute will mark the inauguration of the ‘Condé M. Nast Galleries’, adjacent to The Met’s Great Hall. This upcoming display will directly place the garments alongside the artworks from the Met’s vast collection to showcase how style has been connected to painting, sculpture, illustration, and more.

Met Gala is famed as the grandest fashion celebration will delve into the intricate relationship between garments and artistic expression. Costume Art as the theme aims to make the connection more literal than ever, that is, pairing garments with objects from across the museum. Max Hollein, CEO and director of the Met, announced on Monday that he hopes the exhibit will take visitors to the New York museum on a fashionable journey through art history, where they will see connections throughout. While the world of fashion is excited, here's how we decode the Met Gala 2026 theme ‘Costume Art’ for the spring exhibition.

Decoding Met Gala 2026 Theme ‘Costume Art’

The Metropolitan Museum of Art announces a theme for their exhibition and dress code every year, in which the celebrities have to walk down the red carpet. The theme revealed by the Metropolitan Museum of Art is ‘Costume Art’. While the theme might sound simple, it follows a past filled with centuries of symbolism, craftsmanship and the relationship between society and art. This year, the spring exhibition will focus on Western art from the prehistoric era. This will merge with what we see around us today. This exhibition will feature “Naked Body” and the “Classical Body,” but will less explore themes like “Pregnant Body” and the “Aging Body”.
