Myths About Food Nutrition: The National Nutrition Week is an important event observed across the world to highlight the importance of personal nutrition. It is observed in India in the first week of September when the health authorities come together to create awareness about the significance of nutrition for optimal health.
When it comes to nutrition, we should be more vigilant about the information that we grab. You must have heard some people saying that soy milk increases the risk of cancer or that fat-free foods are healthier than high-fat foods. There are numerous myths about food nutrition that we come across in our daily lives. Here are some food nutrition myths that need to be busted right now.
1. Calories Is What Matters For Weight Loss
Calories definitely play an integral role when it comes to losing weight. The amount of calories you intake and burn has a direct impact on your weight management. But it is the thing that plays a role in weight management. A diet rich in healthy foods, an effective exercise routine, and incorporating healthy habits can help lose those extra kilos effectively.
2. All Fat Is Unhealthy
There are a lot of misconceptions about fats. According to Harvard University, not all fats are alike. Saturated fat, found mainly in meat and dairy foods, contributes to clogged arteries and cardiovascular disease. But monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, found in plants and healthful oils, actually protect your health by improving your cholesterol profile.

3. Diabetes Type 2 Patients Should Not Consume Fruits
Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects millions of people across the world. It is a common myth that if you have diabetes, you should not eat fruits that are ‘too sweet’. While this is completely a myth you can eat any fruit of your choice after consulting with your doctor. According to the Mayo Clinic, the total amount of carbohydrates in a food affects blood sugar levels more than the source of the carbohydrates or whether that carbohydrate source is starch or sugar. As you decide what fruit to eat, keep in mind that one serving of fruit should contain no more than 15 grams of carbohydrates.
4. Plant Milk Is Healthier Than Dairy Milk
It is believed that plant milk such as oat, soy and others are healthier sources of milk than dairy milk. Perhaps this is not true. The WebMD states that plant-based milk is an option for people who can’t or don’t want to drink traditional dairy milk harvested from cows, sheep, or goats.
5. White Potatoes Are Unhealthy
Potatoes are understood to be foods that contribute to significant weight gain. Potatoes are a healthy source of vitamins and minerals that aid in overall health. While eating too much of any food can have adverse effects, the excellent nutritional profile of potatoes makes them a great addition to your healthy diet.
