Onam, a 10-day harvest festival of Kerela took place on August 26, 2025 and will end on September 5, 2025. It is a colourful and meaningful event for the cultural calendar of Kerala Province. It marks the return of King Mahabali, a benevolent ruler who was sent to the netherworld by Lord Vishnu. The festival is a celebration of the harvest season, prosperity and brings people together regardless of faith or community. One of the highlights of the festival is the Onam Sadhya feast which is served on a banana leaf.
And, of course, it pays homage to the famous traditions and cultural heritage of Kerala but there are several other reasons for this serving. Let's understand in detail why Onam Sadhya is typically served on a banana leaf.

Thoran
Thoran is a colourful stir-fried vegetable dish that gives the palette a burst of flavour and colour. It's a crispy and fragrant treat made with finely chopped vegetables, grated coconut and spices. Typically, it is sautéed with turmeric powder and red chillies.
Kootu Curry
