Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange on Thursday issued a sharp warning to the ruling parties, saying that they would be made to "bite the dust" in upcoming elections if Marathas are not included in the Other Backwards Class (OBC) category. Jarange made the statement while speaking to reporters at a private hospital in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar after ending his 5-day hunger strike. He called off the protest following an assurance from the Maharashtra government that it would issue Kunbi certificates to Maratha for reservation in jobs and education.
“If the Hyderabad and Satara gazettes are not implemented in a month, we will make them (ruling parties) bite the dust in the upcoming elections. Step by step, I will ensure that the entire Maratha community is included in the OBC category,” Jarange said, as quoted by news agency PTI.
After the implementation of the Hyderabad Gazette, the Marathas of Marathwada will be eligible to avail a reservation under the OBC category. Hyderabad Gazette will help Marathas to establish their Kunbi credentials and thereby entitle them to seek reservation.
The Government Resolution underlines the framework for verification and issuance of Kunbi status. Maratha community members with historical evidence of their Kunbi heritage, a social group classified as an OBC in the state, will be able to avail a reservation.

The three-member committee at the village level, comprising the gram revenue officer, gram panchayat secretary, and assistant agriculture officer, will check applications from the Marathas to prove their Kunbi heritage.
