Mumbai News: A new controversy has surfaced in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar area, centring on cultural tensions after a Marathi family was reportedly insulted for consuming non-vegetarian food. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) claims that the incident took place in the Shri Shambhu Darshan Society, a residential complex predominantly inhabited by Gujarati families.
According to the MNS, a resident named Shah verbally attacked Ram Ringe and his family, stating, “Marathi people are dirty… they eat fish and mutton.” The society reportedly contains only four Marathi families, while the majority are Gujarati, Marwari or Jain.

Raj Parte, vice-president of the MNS’s labour wing, visited the complex with party workers to address the issue. He warned the residents, saying, “If you want to live and do business in Maharashtra, you must respect Marathi people. Just because there are only four Marathi families here, you cannot insult them. If necessary, we will bring 4,000 people to protest outside this society.”
In a video posted by Parte on social media, members of the society are seen asserting that there are no restrictions on non-vegetarian food within the complex and denying any organised opposition to dietary choices.

This incident occurs amid a larger cultural debate in Mumbai. Recently, senior RSS leader Bhaiyyaji Joshi referred to Ghatkopar as a Gujarati-speaking area, which sparked criticism. The MNS, led by Raj Thackeray, has consistently voiced its concerns about perceived disrespect towards Marathi culture, emphasising that no one has the right to dictate food preferences to Marathi individuals. The party has vowed to respond strongly against any cultural discrimination.
