Mumbai Metro Line 5 Update: After the recent tragedy where four people died while nine others were injured after two local trains passed by each other on sharply-curved tracks near Mumbra railway station, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is set to make efforts to ease the load on the suburban trains by expanding the line 5 of the Mumbai Metro till Ambernath, as per a report by The Free Press Journal.

Kalyan MP and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's son, Dr Shrikant Shinde, has convened a high-level meeting with senior MMRDA officials to deliberate on urgent transit solutions to diversify options.

During the meeting, it was decided to extend Line 5, which is currently operational between Thane and Kalyan, via Bhiwandi. The MMRDA officials have been asked to expedite the detailed project report (DPR), as per Times Property, after which the implementation of the project will be started.

The expansion of this route is to pass via Ulhasnagar from Durgadi Naka to Chikhloli Railway Station in Ambernath and will benefit commuters from Badlapur, along with Ambernath and Ulhasnagar.

As per the plan, an integrated transport hub will also be developed at Chikhloli Station. It will provide easy and seamless connectivity to commuters to switch between suburban trains and Mumbai Metro.

Speaking about the decision, Shinde took to X and said, "The Metro Line 5, which currently connects Thane, Bhiwandi, and Kalyan, will now be extended from Durgadi Naka to Chikhloli Railway Station in Ambernath. This extension along the Kalyan-Badlapur Road will provide significant relief to commuters from Ambernath, Badlapur and Ulhasnagar and reduce the burden on local trains."
