Mumbai News: Maharashtra is preparing to unveil its very own "Mumbai Eye," with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announcing plans for a giant Ferris wheel similar to the iconic London Eye. The ambitious project will be developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model and aims to become a major tourist attraction in the city, offering stunning aerial views of Mumbai and the surrounding film city.

The proposed Mumbai Eye will provide visitors with panoramic views of the city’s impressive skyline. With the BMC recently approving the project, hopes are high that what has been a long-delayed initiative may soon come to fruition.

Mumbai Eye: A Long-Delayed Project

Originally suggested by the Shiv Sena in 2008, the Mumbai Eye project has encountered numerous obstacles over the years, primarily due to local opposition. In 2022, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) planned to install the attraction at Bandra Reclamation promenade, but the proposal was abandoned after facing resistance from residents.

Budget Boost For Mumbai Eye Project

For the financial year 2025-26, the BMC has allocated a budget of approximately Rs 74,427 crore to support the construction of the Mumbai Eye. This budget is an increase of 14.19 per cent compared to the previous year's estimate of Rs 65,180.79 crore.

Mumbai Joins Global Cities Featuring Giant Wheel

If completed, India will join the ranks of 15 countries worldwide featuring similar giant observation wheels. Countries such as the USA, Canada, Sweden, China and Japan already boast their own versions. The London Eye, a 135-metre giant wheel, remains one of the most popular tourist spots in London, renowned for its breathtaking views and birdwatching events.

Currently, the tallest Ferris wheel in the world is located in the UAE, standing at an impressive 250 metres, while Las Vegas's High Roller follows closely at 167.6 metres. The Mumbai Eye aims to offer a unique experience for both locals and tourists, making it a significant addition to the city's attractions.
