A woman doctor from Thane district in Maharashtra is believed to have died after allegedly jumping into the Arabian Sea from Atal Setu, police said on Wednesday. The incident occurred on Monday, but the body of the 38-year-old victim from Bhiwandi, Thane district, is yet to be found, according to senior inspector Rajendra Kote of Navi Mumbai's Nhava Sheva police station.

"The woman was travelling in a taxi on March 18 afternoon. When the taxi reached the Atal Setu, she asked the driver to stop the vehicle there. She then stepped out of and jumped off the bridge. The taxi driver immediately alerted the police, who rushed to the spot and launched an operation to trace her, However, she has not been found so far," he said.

On the same day, personnel at the Bhoiwada police station in the Bhiwandi division filed a report for a missing person, citing her father's complaint. Afterward, he said, they found a suicide note from her home, in which she confessed to killing herself by jumping from the Atal Setu because she had been suffering from severe depression for the previous eight years.

According to the police official, the note also stated that no one, not even the taxi driver who took her there, should be held accountable for her demise. He said that the Nhava Sheva police in Navi Mumbai, along with their Bhiwandi counterparts and other agencies, are conducting an operation to find the woman.

Atal Setu, also called the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) or the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri-Nhava Sheva Atal Setu, was officially opened in January of this year.

In a separate incident, an elderly couple was charred to death when their house was set on fire on Monday night in the Mutthiganj area of Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj district, allegedly by the parents and other family members of their daughter-in-law, who allegedly committed suicide hours earlier, according to police.

The remains of Rajendra Kesarwani, 63, and his wife Shobha Devi, 60, who died in the fire, were found on the second floor of the residence.
