Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on Sunday, June 1, that extensive preparations are in progress for the Simhastha Kumbh Mela 2027, set to take place in Nashik and Trimbakeshwar. The announcement came after a high-level meeting with representatives from all 13 major Akharas, as well as religious leaders, saints, and priests.
Speaking to the media, CM Fadnavis said, “A meeting was organised in connection with the upcoming Kumbh Mela, attended by heads of the 13 Akharas and other religious dignitaries. This time, the fair will be extended in duration, allowing devotees to witness several significant ‘Amrit Snan’ dates and sacred festivals.”
Highlighting the government’s commitment to environmental sustainability, the CM said that a dedicated plan has been formulated to ensure the uninterrupted and clean flow of the Godavari River throughout the Simhastha Kumbh Mela 2027. “A budget of Rs 2,000 crore has been earmarked for works related to river cleanliness and infrastructure. Our goal is to host a divine and grand Kumbh Mela,” he added.
In March, Maharashtra Water Resources and Disaster Management Minister Girish Mahajan reviewed the preparations for the 2027 Kumbh Mela and indicated that the government is also considering the possibility of identifying a new location for the ritualistic holy bath.
Held every 12 years, the Nashik Kumbh Mela is among India’s largest and most significant religious gatherings. To ensure a smooth and spiritually enriching experience for millions of devotees, the state government is prioritizing sanitation, crowd management, infrastructure development, and security. Final decisions on logistics and execution are expected in the coming months.

Festivals in 2028
The year 2028 will witness several important religious festivals observed during the Simhastha Kumbh Mela period. Mauni Amavasya will be celebrated on January 26, followed by Vasant Panchami on February 1. The sacred Ganga-Godavari Festival will take place on February 8, leading up to Maha Shivratri on February 27. The Simhastha Kumbh Mela will conclude on February 20, 2028, with the official closing ceremony scheduled for 3:36 PM.
