Thane Municipal Corporation: The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has cleared the process to file criminal cases against a private English Medium school for refusing to deploy teaching staff on election duty, informed the civic commissioner and district election officer Saurabh Roy on Sunday.

Senior inspector N Kolhatkar of Kasarwadavli police station had informed on Sunday that notice will be served to the school on Monday after filing the case. He said a case is being registered under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with other relevant provisions.

Formal clearance to pursue action against the school was provided on Saturday night. Saurabh Rao, in a press statement issued late on Sunday, stated that election department teams made two attempts to serve appointment orders on the school principal, but were refused entry on both occasions. A subsequent notice was also disregarded, leading to action in accordance with the guidelines of the State Election Commission.

Civic officials noted that this is likely the first case in Thane where such strict measures have been taken against a school authority for failing to cooperate in the election process.

In a related development, more than 2,000 staff members who did not attend pre-poll training were warned of legal consequences on Friday. Following the warning, most of them reported for training on Saturday.

Rao further cautioned that employees assigned election duty who remain absent on January 14 and 15 will face stringent action.
