Bhai Dooj 2025: The sacred festival of Bhai Dooj is celebrated every year on the second day of the Krishna Paksha (dwitiya) of the Kartik month. The festival of Bhai Dooj symbolises the sacred bond between brother and sister. On this day, sisters pray for their brothers' long life, good health, and happiness and prosperity. It is believed that if a sister applies a tilak on their brother's forehead on this day, Yamraj himself protects them. This year, Bhai Dooj will be celebrated on 23rd October 2025.

However, sisters should be especially careful about certain things on Bhai Dooj. These things are prohibited in the scriptures. It is said that these mistakes can lead to incomplete results of the puja. So, let us know what the sisters should and should not do on Bhai Dooj:

Dos And Don’ts To Follow On Bhai Dooj

1. Do Not Use Black Colour For Bhai Dooj Tika

Black colour or kajal should never be used in the tilak on Bhai Dooj. Roli, sandalwood, saffron, or turmeric should be used for the tilak.

2. Do Not Perform Bhai Dooj Tika In Evening

Bhai Dooj puja is performed only in the morning or afternoon. According to the scriptures, applying a tilak or performing a puja in the evening is not considered appropriate. It is believed that the energy of Yamaraj is more potent during this time, which can lead to inauspicious results.

3. Make Sure To Perform The Tika Ceremony

On Bhai Dooj, be sure to apply a tilak to your brother. Failing to do so is considered inauspicious. It is believed that by applying a tilak to her brother, a sister prays to Yamraj to protect him. If your brother lives far away, applying a tilak to his photo and offering blessings is also considered auspicious.

4. Siblings Must Not Fight With Each Other

It is believed that brothers and sisters must not fight with each other on Bhai Dooj as it is believed to upset Lord Yamaraja.

5. Do Not Consume Tamasic Food Items

People must refrain from consuming Tamasic food items like onion, garlic, meat, eggs and alcohol, as it is believed to interfere with the sactitity of the day. Additionally, it is believed that the sisters must not consume anything before applying a tilak on their brothers’ foreheads.

6. Worship Lord Yamaraj And River Yamuna

Avoid any haste in performing the rituals on Bhai Dooj. Sisters often rush through the entire ritual. This should be avoided, as rushing the puja can anger both the gods and Yamraj. Perform the puja with full devotion and faith. Also, on this day, both brothers and sisters should worship Yamraj and Yamuna together.
