Chhath Puja 2025: Significance And Rituals

Chhath Mahaparv celebrated during Kartik month is celebrated for family happiness and prosperity and to get the desired results. Men and women celebrate this festival equally. The first day of Chhath Puja starts with Nahay-Khay.

Before Nahai-Khai, the devotees take bath in the holy water of the river or at home. They eat pumpkin, gram dal and rice. The next day, Kharna fast is observed. In the evening of Kharna fast, the devotees perform puja with jaggery kheer, wheat roti, banana, etc. as prasad and consume that prasad themselves and distribute it among their family and people around them. After that, the devotees remain on a waterless fast for 36 hours.

It is believed that worshipping the Sun and Chhathi Maiya brings prosperity. The sun's rays are believed to cure many diseases. Kharna worship bestows the blessings of Shashthi Devi, also known as Chhathi Maiya. As per the Hindu legends, Chhathi Maiya is the Manas Putri of Lord Brahma and the sister of the Sun God.
