Chhath Puja 2025: Who Is Chhathi Maiya
According to religious beliefs, Chhath Devi is the sister of Sun God, and to appease and thank her, Sun God and Chhathi Maiya are worshipped on Chhath. Chhath Puja is performed while standing in water on the banks of a sacred river or body of water.
Chhathi Maiya is the goddess who protects children. Therefore, Chhathi Devi is worshipped on the sixth day after a child's birth, bestowing the child with success, good health, and a long life. It is also believed that when Prakriti Devi, the presiding deity of creation, divided herself into six parts, her sixth part became known as the supreme mother goddess. This goddess is the mind-born daughter of Lord Brahma. According to the Markandeya Purana, this sixth part is known as the Supreme Mother Goddess, known as Chhathi Maiya.

Significance Of Worshipping Chhathi Maiya During Chhath Puja
Chhathi Maiya or the protector of children is worshipped on the sixth day of the bright fortnight of the month of Kartik. This puja is also performed six days after the birth of a child. Worshipping her bestows the child with health, success, and a long life. Chhathi Maiya is also known as Katyayani. She is worshipped on the sixth day during Navratri. Mother Katyayani protects children and blesses them with health, success, and longevity.
The form of Chhathi Maiya symbolises the mother's power. In the Sanatan tradition, Shashthi Devi is considered the protector of children and the one who bestows longevity on them. The Mahabharata and the Puranas also describe the glory of Shashthi Devi. The tradition of worshipping Shashthi Devi as Chhathi Maiya is rooted in the belief that she protects children and blesses them with progeny, this is why, the benefits of worshipping Chhathi Devi during Chhath Mahaparv holds utmost importance.
