How Sharad Purnima Is Celebrated In Banke Bihari Temple Vrindavan

On this special night, Brijwasis fondly remember it as the night of Maharas, when Shri Bihariji Maharaj assumes the Maharas posture. In the afternoon, the Jagmohan, the elevated hall in front of the sanctum, is transformed to resemble a forest, adorned with flowering branches. A silver hut is placed at the centre as his throne, while the temple courtyard is decorated with banana trees, flowers, and vibrant hangings, creating a divine and festive atmosphere.

The evening darshan on this night is truly extraordinary. Bihariji moves from his usual place to the Jagmohan, coming closer to devotees amid the forest-like setting. He is dressed entirely in dazzling white, intricately decorated with zari work, a striking contrast to his usual dark form. This special attire and arrangement set the mood for Maharas, inviting devotees into an intimate and spiritually uplifting experience.

On this evening alone, the murali, or flute, is held in Bihariji Maharaj’s hands and placed to his lips. On all other days, it remains beside the throne with a small water container. The celestial sound of Krishna’s flute, beloved by the gopis of Brij, captivates hearts, drawing every devotee and living being towards Krishna consciousness.
