Cupertino-based tech giant Apple is reportedly in talks with leading news organisations across the world to ask for permission to use their content to develop its generative AI initiatives, according to the New York Times. The tech giant reportedly floated deals worth $50 million to gain access to archives of news publishers. Among a few news outlets, Apple reached out to include Condé Nast (publisher of Vogue), New Yorker, NBC News, and IAC.
The response from the publishers (that Apple reached out to) was "lukewarm", Reuters citing NYT reported. While tech companies like Google, Microsoft and OpenAI continue to integrate AI at a rapid pace, Apple has been modest while integrating this system across its product line to accomplish basic functions.
Recently, the tech giant introduced MacBook Pro and new iMac PCs next to three new 'M' series chips. Introduced in October, the new CPUs were touted as a relevant pick for AI researchers due to the massive storage space. On a related note, MacRumors, citing a research note, reported that Apple AI experts have achieved a "key breakthrough" in implementing LLMs on Apple products. The innovative memory utilisation tech can use the flash memory used by apps and photos to preserve AI data.

The research note titled: "LLM in a flash: Efficient Large Language Model Inference with Limited Memory" highlighted two techniques (Windowing and Row-column Bundling) how the model can run on the device storage rather than RAM. The combination of the recycling method that reuses select old data for processing and scanning items in chunks rather than words, can help run a model twice the size of the flash memory of an iPhone.

These changes may help build a more advanced version of Siri, better language translation and AI features for the camera and AR (Augmented Reality)/VR (Virtual Reality). Plus, the innovation can help run more advanced versions of chatbots and assistants on iPhone. Other enhancements may be implemented within the Messages app. Moreover, Apple GPT and more enhancements may debut with iOS 18.
