iOS 18 Update: Cupertino-based tech giant Apple released the stable build of iOS 17 in September this year. While it is a relatively new OS, rumours about the next iteration of the software are cropping from several unofficial channels. Among the significant ones are the details from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. He claims the development work of the upcoming operating systems was paused by Craig Federighi, Senior VP of Software Engineering, in October.

As per the 'Power On' newsletter of Gurman, these early versions failed to miss the benchmark. This pause enabled the tech giant to rethink and work on debugging and improvements in performance. The upcoming iterations of all the software (ranging from iOS 18 to watchOS 11) are crucial for the company as they will be Apple's attempt to swim next to Google and Microsoft in the generative AI war.

Further, Gurman added that the hardware of the iPhone 16 models will not offer a steep bump hardware-wise. Hence, Apple will likely market the software as a pivot to upgrade to the next iPhones. He added that the first milestone of the "biggest new features" of iOS 18 and macOS 15 was done and dusted last month.

However, as per the journalist, the release will likely remain on track even after the short pause. And he goes on to add the upcoming software may be "groundbreaking" compared with its predecessors. Plus, Apple's top management has labelled the OS as "ambitious and compelling," with new features and UI besides improved security and performance.

On a related note, the company is reportedly working on a large language model (LLM) called Ajax that is being tested with the Apple GPT. AI enhancements for Siri and the Messages app are expected in the new iOS. Secondly, updates within Apple Music, such as AI-generated features, are expected.

Meanwhile, reports hint that the iPhone 16 Pro is being tested with a centre punch-hole notch in the screen. However, tipster Majin Bu added that the notch is expected to arrive in the iPhone 17 Pro models. You can read about this latest update here.
