Apple, a Cupertino-based tech giant, is expected to unveil the iPhone 16 series next month. Weeks ahead of a release, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported the tech giant could unveil new variants of the AirPods 4 in September 2024. Citing the journalist, 9To5Mac reported the versions could include an entry-level trim and a mid variant, which may replace the AirPods 2 and AirPods 3.

According to Gurman, the entry-level version will replace the AirPods 2 and the more pricey offering could join in the footsteps of AirPods 3. While the design is rumoured to remain similar, the differentiating factor may be Active Noise Cancellation (ANC). While the "mid-tier" AirPods may get ANC, the "entry-level" variant may not gain the noise-cancelling technology.

Readers should note that the AirPods 4 should not be confused with the AirPods Pro 3. The successor of the AirPods Pro (2nd generation) is expected at a later time frame. However, Gurman did not share any major details or a precise timeframe for the launch. For context, Apple may host the iPhone 16 launch event on September 10, 2024.

Coming to the rumoured AirPods versions, the AirPods 4 may ship with a USB Type-C port. 9To5Mac speculates the entry-level trim may not get wireless charging support. However, the mid-trim may get the functionality. For context, the AirPods 2 has been on the shelf since 2019 as an entry-level choice. It sports the signature AirPods-like design.

Meanwhile, the company is expected to unveil the iPhone 16 series at the September event. The lineup may include the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Apple could also unveil the new Watch 10 series at the event.
