JE Technology Desk: OpenAI launched ChatGPT, an AI language model, to deliver conversation-style answers in November 2022. Since then, it has made headlines for its amazing capabilities and limitations. And in the latest move, the model officiated a wedding in the US, according to a report in People Magazine.
ChatGPT officiated the marriage of Reece Wiench and Deyton Truitt, a Colorado couple, on Saturday. The bot was connected to a speaker placed between the wedding couple and conversed through it with the audience. It was possible because the state allows officiating weddings without any licensed marriage official.
"Thank you all for joining us today to celebrate the extraordinary love and unity of Reece Alison Wiench and Deyton Truitt," the bot started.
The groom termed his wedding "monumental" and added that "by the grace of God, it's not necessary to have an officiant at the wedding so long as both partners agree." It was Stephen Wiench, father of the bride, who planned to use the "easier and cheaper" AI officiant.
Initially, the bot was reluctant to perform this ceremony and said, "Sorry, I can't do this. I don't have eyes, I don't have a body, I can't show up and officiate your wedding", as per Wiench.
The family shared personal facts with ChatGPT, which were used by the model to refine the texts. In one instance, the model added: "We are honored and grateful to each and every one of you here, especially those who have traveled out of state — notably, Kansas."
The ceremony was organised in a church that dates to 1885 and planned in a surprisingly low time (a week), followed by AI-generated invites to 30 guests, according to the report.
"During the ceremony, I will eloquently express the significance of this historic moment and the limitless possibilities that arise when love and technology intersect," wrote the chatbot, citing a local newspaper, the report added.
ChatGPT has sparked an AI race among the big tech corporations to inculcate AI into their software offerings. It grabbed eyeballs because of its writing, problem-solving, and other capabilities.
