Elon Musk has confirmed that his AI startup, xAI, is developing a new digital encyclopedia called Grokipedia. The project is being pitched as a direct competitor to Wikipedia, which Musk has frequently criticised. He described Grokipedia as a significant upgrade over the current platform, aligning with xAI’s larger mission of advancing human understanding through artificial intelligence.

The announcement follows a string of public criticisms Musk has made about Wikipedia, accusing the site of bias and claiming it promotes a left-leaning agenda. His scepticism about the platform is well-documented. In 2023, Musk jokingly offered to pay $1 billion if Wikipedia would change its name to “Dickipedia”. More recently, his dissatisfaction intensified after an entry alleged he had performed a Nazi salute at a Trump inauguration event — an accusation Musk openly disputed.
Though Grokipedia is still in the early stages of development, Musk appears eager to move quickly. Reports suggest xAI is already hiring for the project, an indication that it won’t remain an idea for long. Musk envisions Grokipedia as an AI-driven alternative to Wikipedia, promising higher levels of accuracy, reliability, and what he calls information integrity.
Musk has also publicly invited collaborators to join in shaping the platform. “Join @xAI and help build Grokipedia, an open-source knowledge repository that is far superior to Wikipedia! This will be available to the public with no restrictions,” he wrote, signalling an open-source approach that mirrors some of Wikipedia’s original values while aiming to improve on them.

The new encyclopedia is expected to integrate with Grok, the AI chatbot launched by xAI in 2023 to rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Grok is designed to detect misinformation, provide context, and correct inaccuracies. By combining these features with an encyclopaedia framework, Musk believes Grokipedia could become a more dependable knowledge base than community-edited platforms. However, questions remain about how the system will operate in practice, and no official launch timeline has been revealed yet.
