Remember when you could 'Poke' your friends on Facebook and then it would turn into a poke war frenzy? Guess what? Meta is bringing that feature back again, which will surely make some of its older users nostalgic. The feature was originally introduced in 2004; this 'Poke' allowed you to send a simple nudge to your friends, a subtle way of saying hello, and turn their attention towards you. This was also used as a fun way to just communicate without initiating any conversation or sending a personalised message.
"Sending pokes just got easier," said a post from Facebook, and the caption went like, "It's time to start poking again."
In a post on Instagram, the company iterated that it was bringing back the Poke feature to the Facebook app. "Pokes never really left, but they're making a comeback in a major way!"
Following this, Facebook users will be able to see all the pokes that they have received on a special page. According to Meta, earlier pokes were easily missed; now on facebook.com/pokes, users will be able to see all the pokes they have received so far.
Apart from that, Pokes just got a lot more interactive as well; now different emojis will also appear depending on the amount of pokes exchanged between the friends, something similar to what Snapchat has.
What Was The Poke Feature?
The Poke feature first appeared on Facebook back in 2004 as a light-hearted way to grab someone’s attention. In the early years it became a trademark of the platform, often used to flirt, joke around with friends, or simply break the ice without typing out a message. Teenagers and college students especially embraced it.
Over time, as Facebook added Messenger, likes, and reactions, Poke began to fade in importance and was eventually pulled from the main app around 2014.

Today, the option is back in a simpler form. Instead of hunting through a separate page, users can poke friends straight from their profiles. A notification is sent whenever someone pokes you, making the interaction easy to notice. As Meta explained, “Now you can poke your friends directly from their profiles and learn about new activities through notifications.”
