2025 was the year a lot of people really started to lean on Gemini when they were on their phone. While Google is still hedging its full bet on life without Assistant, those who’ve made the switch have felt how competent Gemini can be at mobile times. You’ll be able to activate it in the Gemini app, AI Mode in Search or other entry points, but the fastest and most natural might just be the Gemini overlay. Now Google is testing an upgrade that could make the process a lot more practical.

The Complication With The Current Gemini Overlay

Right now, the Gemini overlay is more of an ephemeral layer than a utilitarian multitasking feature. You activate it with the hotword or a long press of the power button, ask your question, and hang out in Googleland until you’re satisfied. The moment you tap anywhere outside the overlay, it vanishes.

That’s because there’s no way to hop back to the app you were using and let Gemini work on your request. Close the app and you close the session; when you next open Gemini, it’s back to start. This can feel limiting for instances where users want to cross-check information, copy text or continue working while awaiting a reply.

New popup behavior found in beta

In the beta version 16.51.52. sa. Google app’s arm64 version Recently, a new Gemini overlay behaviour has been discovered, which seems to be just what the doctor ordered. Although live for users, the early interface shows a more flexible way in which the overlay works.

With this new arrangement, you can start a Gemini query and then jump back to whatever app you are in. Gemini works in the background and you’re prompted to respond when your reply is ready, via a temporary floating button. Tap that button and the Gemini overlay pops back to life, exactly where you left it.

Keeping Gemini Sessions Alive

What makes this tweak so nice is it allows Gemini sessions to persist. No longer are you required to finish everything in one shot: You can accomplish tasks without the cumbersome overlay, switch apps and return at your leisure without losing context.

When you’re finished with Gemini for good, a casual swipe removes the overlay altogether. Until you do, the conversation will persist, which makes Gemini feel more like a quiet helper than any kind of pop-up tool.

Why This Feels Like a True Upgrade

This change eliminates one of the largest sticking points with the Gemini overlay, without adding complexity. It maintains the speed and convenience of an overlay while adding real multitasking support. For those who use Gemini while doing research, writing or switching between apps over the course of a day, this could potentially make a meaningful difference in overall usage.

There’s currently no official word on when Google would plan to roll this out more widely, but if this makes its way to stable builds, then the Gemini overlay might well become one of the best-polished AI experiences going on Android.
