Google is reportedly trying a new accessibility option in Gemini Live—captions displaying answers in real-time text as they are given. Intended for users who are deaf or hard of hearing and for many other quiet users, this feature allows users to engage with Gemini AI in a more seamless and friendly manner. The captions are located in the middle of the screen, which means that users who wish to learn about what is being said do not want to increase the volume. Caption font, size and colour can be changed according to users who have changed.

Though not officially released, some users have already reported seeing it, suggesting some sort of gradual release.

Real-Time Captions Spotted in the Wild

9to5Google noticed the new feature first when it surfaced on Reddit with users sharing their experiences using real-time captions in Gemini Live. As per the information put together by Android Authority, this update is linked to the Google app version 16.21.57, which seems to be under limited distribution for now.

How the Feature Works

Once the feature is activated, a dialogue box icon can be seen in the right hand corner of Gemini Live and clicking this icon lets users switch the captions on or off.

Key Behaviors:

  • When activated, Gemini's voiced replies are displayed as transcriptions on the screen in real time.
  • The captioning feature mutes the necessity to increase the phone's volume for the chatbot to work conveniently.
  • Disguise in public settings or low-volume situations and still keep up to date with the action.

Accessibility and Discreet Interaction

Easier access to information is one of the most beneficial aspects of captions as users do not need to turn up the volume during interactions. Previously, Gemini Live would drown users in volume because it usually prompted users to turn the volume up for it to work effectively. Now, users can enjoy silent interaction without noise, ideal for libraries and other places where judgment and exposure needs to be controlled.

Customization Options in Gemini Settings

Android Authority posted screenshots of the new Captions preference menu within Gemini that allows users to customise captions:

  • Enable or disable the real-time captions
  • Choose from different caption sizes
  • Adjust the caption style for better readability
  • These customization options make the feature more versatile and user-friendly.

Rollout Status

The update is in a limited phase rollout and only a select portion of users have it accessible at this time. Nonetheless, Google is likely to increase the scope of these broad app updates in the coming days.

Conclusion

The addition of real-time captions to Gemini Live is another way Google is trying to make AI interfaces less intrusive and more accessible. By adding live transcription coupled with user-friendly customization, it is bound to improve experience across environments for the users. With more people waiting for the rollout, this update is bound to benefit users soon with some great features.
