When we talk about the biggest video games ever made, the focus usually falls on AAA titles — the blockbuster projects with years of development, massive budgets, and marketing campaigns that rival Hollywood films. Games like GTA V, Red Dead Redemption 2, The Last of Us Part II, and God of War Ragnarok all fit that description.

But Rockstar’s upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI is already being described as something far beyond that. Some in the industry are calling it the first-ever “AAAAA” game, a sign of just how much weight the release is expected to carry.

Why GTA 6 Is Being Called AAAAA

The phrase came from Nigel Lowrie, co-founder of Devolver Digital, in a recent conversation with IGN. Lowrie explained that the GTA series stands apart from every other franchise in terms of ambition and cultural presence.

“There are AAA games and then there are AAAA games, but GTA is the ‘AAAAA game’,” he said. “It’s just bigger than anything else, both in the scope and scale of the game and the kind of cultural impact that it has and the attention it demands.”

Record-Breaking Predictions

That sense of scale isn’t just about reputation. Analysts believe GTA 6 could be the biggest launch in gaming history. In July, Josh Chapman of Konvoy shared projections that the game could bring in $7.6 billion in revenue within its first 60 days on sale.

Chapman also suggested Rockstar might price the game at around $80, higher than the standard $69.99 charged for most new AAA titles on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. He added that GTA 6 could evolve into a major user-generated content (UGC) platform, creating opportunities for modders and content creators to earn from their work. His estimate? As many as 85 million copies sold in the first two months.

Release Date and Expectations

Earlier this year, Rockstar unveiled the second trailer for GTA 6 and confirmed its official release date: May 26, 2026. The game had originally been expected in late 2025 but was pushed back. While some reports suggest another delay is possible given the game’s massive scope, others say Rockstar is firmly on track.
