Instagram head Adam Mosseri has shared a stark view on how rapidly advancing artificial intelligence could reshape the future of social media. According to Mosseri, AI-generated images and videos are improving so quickly that distinguishing them from real, camera-captured content may soon become nearly impossible. As a result, Instagram is being forced to evolve faster than ever, with authenticity emerging as the platform’s most valuable currency.

“Authenticity Is Becoming Infinitely Reproducible”

In a detailed carousel post shared on December 31, Mosseri described AI-generated media as one of the biggest risks Instagram faces heading into 2026. He warned that as technology accelerates, platforms that fail to adapt could quickly become irrelevant.

“For most of my life, I could safely assume photographs or videos were largely accurate captures of moments that happened,” Mosseri wrote. “This is clearly no longer the case.” He added that users will increasingly approach online content with scepticism rather than trust, as synthetic media becomes indistinguishable from reality.

Mosseri believes that even if Instagram can identify AI-generated content today, doing so consistently in the future will be far more difficult. He suggested that one possible solution could involve camera manufacturers cryptographically signing photos at the moment of capture, creating a verifiable marker for real images.

The End of Polished Instagram Aesthetics

The Instagram chief also acknowledged that the platform’s old identity has already faded. The era where users carefully curated polished photos for their public feed is largely over, he said. Most genuine personal moments are now shared privately through Direct Messages, often as blurry photos, shaky videos, or unfiltered candids.

Mosseri referred to this shift as a “raw aesthetic,” arguing that perfectly edited images are no longer impressive. With AI making high-quality visuals cheap and easy to generate, he believes they are becoming boring to consume.

According to him, the real value going forward lies in content that cannot be easily replicated. The creative bar is shifting away from “can you create something” to “can you create something only you could make.”

How Instagram Plans to Respond

Mosseri made it clear that Instagram cannot afford to move slowly. To stay relevant, the platform must adapt its tools and systems to an AI-heavy content ecosystem. He said Instagram needs to improve how it labels AI-generated media, verify authentic content, surface credibility signals about who is posting, and reward originality more effectively in its ranking systems.

While AI-powered creation tools are becoming central to content production, Mosseri’s message was clear: technology may be advancing fast, but authenticity will matter more than ever. For Instagram, surviving the AI era may depend less on visuals that look perfect and more on moments that feel unmistakably human.
