Instagram, a popular app by Meta, is testing the functionality to let users upload reels that may span up to 10 minutes. While it was leaked by mobile developer Alessandro Paluzzi first, TechCrunch received a confirmation from Meta that the feature is indeed in the testing phase.

According to the report, the company is not testing the functionality in open beta yet. Paluzzi shared a screengrab of the internal testing build giving the audience a sneak peek into the feature. As per the report, once the duration limit is increased (from the current three minutes), the company will directly lock horns with another short video giant TikTok.

Owned by Bytedance, short-video player TikTok introduced enhanced limits in February last year. This move will also scale Reels head-to-head with YouTube Shorts.

With the move, Meta could allow creators and influencers more time length in one piece of content to prevent users from juggling across a second part or more subsequent ones of the content via another reel. It will also open more content avenues on the platform for education, vlogging, cooking and more videos. As highlighted, this would allow creators to eliminate the need to make a series of videos on one topic in one go.

On a related note, the video-sharing app YouTube also introduced a suite of features to improve the short video creation experience on the platform. Speaking of other updates on Meta, the company recently announced Threads as a rival to the Elon Musk platform X. While the app witnessed sky-rocketing download numbers in the beginning, the user base is now dwindling due to a lack of features on the app.
